But it is very possible that my memory mixes those up with outside commentators' statements. I bet more people today would be familiar with the name Black Sabbath than Deep Purple and whilst I've seen lots of youngsters with Sabbath t-shirts, I don't think I've ever seen anyone under about 57 wearing a Deep Purple shirt.Ĭlick to expand.I believe I got the idea of them competing with each other from band members' accounts as cited in books about the band. Sabbath are (rightly) viewed as being the godfathers of metal and have an almost mythical status in music whilst Purple are mostly just seen as a band that had their day. However, I think these days there's probably far more reverence for Sabbath than Purple. You could argue that back in the day (ie up to mid-70s) Purple were a 'bigger' band in terms of the audience sizes at their gigs (and possibly record sales) and after all Sabbath were a support act in the infamous California Jam at which Purple headlined. I'm sure there are people that like one but not the other but I imagine there's a significant amount of overlap in terms of fanbases (I for one love them both). But then I never tend to think of any bands being rivals per se, I think that's something that the music press tends to dream up i.e. PO Box, Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Anguilla, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan Republic, Belarus, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Cook Islands, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), Fiji, French Polynesia, Gabon Republic, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Greenland, Guam, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mayotte, Micronesia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Netherlands Antilles, New Caledonia, Niger, Nigeria, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Puerto Rico, Republic of the Congo, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Saint Helena, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Senegal, Serbia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Suriname, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vatican City State, Venezuela, Virgin Islands (U.S.The two bands do span the same eras and of course they have these family ties, but I've never really thought about them being in competition with each other, really.
